OVERVIEW

We’re here to do the studies no one else is doing.
Future-facing, curiosity-led, and unapologetically bold—we explore what others overlook. This isn’t just research. It’s a movement to redefine what science can ask, and what healing can look like.

CURRENT STUDIES

■ SET AND SETTING

It is widely assumed that the EFFECTS OF PSYCHEDELIC SUBSTANCES CRITICALLY DEPEND ON CONTEXT - the ‘set and setting’ in which they are used. With the Set and Setting Study, we aim to test this interaction in a controlled way, by giving participants either psilocybin or a placebo in one of two different kinds of context.

The study will be taking place at the UCSF Mission Bay campus in San Francisco, and participants with lower-than-average well-being but no serious underlying physical or mental health conditions are currently being enrolled. Check if you are eligible by clicking the button below!

■ PSILOCYBIN VS. SSRI FOR DEPRESSION

The Carhart-Harris Lab at UCSF id designing a head-to-head clinical trial comparing psilocybin and a standard antidepressant as treatments for depression in young adults.

We are looking for young adults aged 18-24 with depression to give feedback about our trial design. If you want to help shape the future of treatments, scan the QR code or click the button below to sign up and share your voice.

■ UCSF CANOPY Project

The Carhart-Harris lab at University of California San Francisco is excited to announce the launch of a new large-scale online survey study on the effects of psychedelic drugs.

With this new study, we hope to advance our understanding of the psychological effects of psychedelics when used in real-world settings in order to enhance the safety, awareness, and well-being of psychedelic users.

The survey is intended for anybody who is planning to take a psychedelic substance, in any type of setting - this could be at your own home, a festival, a psychedelic retreat, or psilocybin service center. Depending on how much time you are willing to dedicate, there is a brief and easy and an optional more thorough version of the study. And if you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, you might even be eligible to get your brain scanned before and after your experience.

■ INSIGHT 2: PSILOCYBIN fMRI STUDY

The Carhart-Harris Lab at University of California San Francisco is recruiting experienced psychonauts for a groundbreaking fMRI study on psilocybin.

Participants will attend four full-day sessions (Fridays, one week apart), helping researchers map the neural and physiological correlates of psychedelic states. Eligible participants receive $570 for their time.

If you are interested and have further questions, please get in touch.

■ PSYCHEDELIC CREATIVITY STUDY

Have you ever experienced a creative breakthrough during a psychedelic journey?

The Carhart-Harris Lab at University of California San Francisco is inviting healthy volunteers (18+) to take part in an online survey study exploring the connection between psychedelics and creativity.

If you’ve had such an experience and would like to contribute to cutting-edge research, we’d love to hear from you.

■ PUMA - Psychedelic Use and the Mental Health of Adolescents

The Carhart-Harris Lab is running a study on psychedelic use and psychotic symptoms in adolescents.

We are seeking adults over 18 who speak English, have email access, and 1) either personally tried psychedelics during adolescence and experienced psychotic symptoms and/or psychotic illness, or 2) are family members, partners, close friends, or caregivers of adolescents who have experienced psychotic symptoms or illness in connection with psychedelic use.

If you’re interested in contributing through an interview, please fill out this survey!
